There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime spot, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat casino, features 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that contains a number of conveniences aside from the gambling hall, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
